coffeebn101
I honestly thought that I was the only one who had problems watching rape scenes. Some of my triggers include: The song "Bad Moon Rising" by CCR The song "The Freshman" by The Verv Pipe Clockwork Orange Stephen King Novels Beer Sandpaper Hands I know they all seem a little strange together, but they fit together in my head. Guest DirtFire
My weirdest trigger is mushrooms...... the smell of mushrooms gags me because semen smells like mushrooms, that musty nasty smell. Another one is seeing children sit on Santa's lap. Oh, and the words 'stroke' and 'cock'. Turtle and Ashley-Michelle, I can relate. The word 'panties' bothers me so much, that I nearly didn't join this forum because the name "Pandy's" triggered me. And I am also triggered by the photo of the girl leaning on the tree that's on every page in this site. I have to move the page on my screen so I don't have to look at that photo. Most of my triggers seem to be pretty common, judging from this thread. The smell of alcohol on someone's breath, and the smell of Old Spice cologne, a hand over my mouth, anyone touching me if I don't see it coming. Several posters have said beards trigger them. But for me, a man who shaves bothers me, because there will be that "grizzle" in a few hours....... I insist my husband has a full beard year round because full beards are soft and not scratchy. Tallulah
its weird,i didn't necessarily think of stuff as triggering, til i read this post,i think its helped: *T* -the smell of whisky -people walking up behind me/jumping out at me -small spaces -going out when i feel unsafe or upset -Being in Taxi s(especially on my own) -being somewhere i haven't been before -September -Christmas -seeing kids be mistreated in any way(on tv,in the street,in shops etc) -Dreams about the house i grew up in -beinhg told what to do in intimate situations -feeling unsafe(alone in the house, walking at night, people i don't know coming over)this one is usuallyworse when i already feel down -Going to new places -plans changing at short notice(feels unsafe) -uncertainty -people yelling at me/confrontations/arguements -that song that goes"what a difference a day makes 24 little hours"......i have no idea why -feeling pressured to do things(in any form, it just makes me get that closed in feeling) wow....there s more than i thought

Guest Angelina27
I think this post is an awesome idea. (This is my very first time on the site...so "hi" to everyone.) I dont think I have many odd triggers, but I do have several * The smell of a certain mans cologne (dont know the name of it) * Being held down * Sex in general used to give me flashbacks (I have a wonderfully understanding fiance!) * Hearing the sound of a toy saxaphone from the dollar store (and a few other kids toys) * Men about 5'7 or 5'8, kinda built, and have facial hair. *shiver* * Really cheap, tacky looking leopard print * Having my nose closed off * Any kind of rough sex scene (doesnt have to be rape, just rough) * Any kind of bondage (real life or movies) * Some porn * White work vans * A certain city... We'll call it Hellville... I didnt realize how many I had!! Wow. I think this site is going to be really good for me! ~Angie
katiealison89
I think its good to discuss triggers. Its so crazy how suddenly a trigger can occur, and how odd and random they can be. Its good to know that Im not the only one who experiences weird triggers. Any mentioning of the word r*pe...esp in a joking manner The material that suits are made out of...(that scratchy rough fabric) The song My Humps by Black Eyed Peas (it was playing in the background) some mans cologne (im not sure what the name of it is...but i can tell you when some one is wearing it) being grabbed from behind the waist My feet or legs being touched Wearing a thong Any sexual attention Dances or clubs...loud music and lots of people in confined areas Being drunk Chiffon material (like the dress i was wearing) Being touched on the hips bones or around my waist area watching any r*pe scenes in movies
Guest Sparrow
I have some strange triggers and I am still trying to figure out all of them. I do have a question regarding them also. I know triggers cause flashbacks or snapshots of the ab*se. But what about how they "feel" I seem to have more emotional type triggers where I numb out or dissociate. Can anyone discribe what their triggers do or how you feel to better understand? Thanks! Here are some of mine: Large men especially men in general Women's breasts crowded rooms or elevators pornography sexual talk any mention of the prom the beach at night people too close loud voices angry people disrespect not being heard digital penetration bananas drinking from a bottle oral sex movements like male masturbation smells of body odor canasta or cards cribbage the name Steve r*pe scenes on t.v./movies any talk of inc*st cucumbers well I'm a little weirded out...so I think I'm done for now. Shalom
I seem to have more emotional type triggers where I numb out or dissociate. Can anyone discribe what their triggers do or how you feel to better understand? I am more likely to respond to my triggers emotionally than to see images as well, although once in a while I'll be triggered and get an image (or a sound or a smell). Aside from dissociating and "going passive" (where I obey commands but can't speak), sometimes when I'm triggered I'm just completely terrified all of a sudden, or very agitated without even being able to put a name to what I'm feeling. Once when that happened I ended up lashing out at a guy who'd done nothing wrong - the situation was VERY parallel to an abusive one in a number of ways and the guy I attacked was, I'm afraid, the "stand in" for the guy who set me up the other time. But even though I could consciously remember that abuse, I didn't make the connection between my response the other time for years and years. I didn't even consciously label what I was feeling at the time as "fear". Couldn't understand why I'd lost it that way, but once the light dawned it was painfully obvious why I was triggered, even though it wasn't by anything that normally gets me but rather a combination of little stuff that made the situations similar. thriver
I used to have such an enormous list of triggers. (Many same as listed here by others.) My responses would vary. Sometimes I would go into a full-blown flashback and either start lashing out, hitting and elbowing my poor husband in bed, or I'd curl up into the fetal position and rock myself, or I'd blurt out something I said as a child, or I'd have this overwhelming compulsion to hide in the dark (in the closet, under a desk, etc.). Other times I'd just dissociate and "check out." Okay, I'm feeling like a real nutcase here. Anyway, I was so grateful to find a trauma processing expert and we've eliminated many triggers--Yay! Sometimes, I was able to work on triggers all by themselves, without even having to access a terrifying memory. That was phenomenal!!! One I'm still working on is the feel of hair on my face (got over the visual phobia of seeing hair) A weird one I'm baffled over is the feel of water running down my arms (like when I wash my face and the water trickles down) Anyone else have something like that? Guest booklady
Hi, Currently my triggers are: - Anthing to do with the movie "The Wizard of Oz." I do mean ANYTHING, even the books, songs. Once I had to leave a bookstore and have a friend calm me down because they had the compleate colection on display. When I went back in she had to stay with me. - People grabbing me by the elbow, it's worse when I can't see them (like when they come up behind me) but even if I can see them it's bad. - Being somewhere that I can't get out of easily (i.e.- church, airports, classes, anywhere). - Males giving me complements about my looks. Sometimes giving me complements at all. - Having my hair down, especialy when another person takes it down. Once my teacher almost had security come get me because one of the other students took down my hair as a joke and she couldn't even get me to breath. - Any mention of b.j. s (NOT the name, thank goodness) it's what happened first. I think that is all for now. This was a good idea. Naomi Edited February 15, 2006 by booklady

desert_willow
- R*pe in tv, movies, books, etc. - talk of rape, insinuated or otherwise - Men over the age of about 16 or so. - Children, sometimes - Seeing a man dominate over a woman - Certain forms of intimate touch - When a man stands too close to me, talks in my face, or touches me at all if I haven't given him permission. - Cops. Even traffic stops make me frantic as I've been harassed by the cops several times. - Seeing men cat call or look a woman or girl up and down or make rude comments. - Groups of men hanging out together - Anti-abortion stuff - Seeing men and little girls together - Smells. I have no idea what they are, it just happens. - My hands being held down - The back of my head being held, like you see sometimes when couples are kissing. - Movies about or depicting hookers - Giving a man oral sex - Not being asked first before sex. - Feeling immobilized or pinned down. - Rough sex - Crude gestures, like a man simulating masturbation or something - The abstinence preachers who make sex and those who engage in it sound dirty. Anyone who suggests non-virgins are "impure" or have lost their value. Anyone who disputes the validity of rape. - Hearing about women being good for only sex. Any anti-woman statements in fact. - Wearing short skirts. - Any sexual attention at all, except from my husband but even then only when I say it's alright. I can't think of what else. I didn't realize I had so many. A shorter list would be what doesn't trigger me!
Katie N
Plenty of 'normal' ones at the moment that I won't go into because I'd imagine that they're pretty communal, but the 'weird' ones are listed below... --having my wrists/elbows held (at any time) --seeing any kind of blue car that is shaped like an estate (where it started) --being shouted at --seeing leather belts --hearing J's or Lu's name --hugging (sometimes... and it seems to be unpredictable this one....)
