Reminder about online safety

5 posts in this topic

We just wanted to remind everyone to use caution when giving out personal information, both in the chat rooms and on the boards. This includes your full name, location, and instant messaging information. We strongly encourage members to avoid sharing personally identifying information with other members. If you do choose to share information such as IM screennames, we offer the following suggestions:

  • You may want to remove your AIM/MSN/Yahoo Messenger information from your profile. You can instead write that you have the messenger and may provide it upon request. Remember that your profile is viewable to all registered members. To protect yourself, we suggest removing this information from your profile and sharing it only with those you know and trust.
  • If a member asks you to download messenger programs, remember that you have the right to say no. You do not need to be pressured into chatting off Pandy's. If you continue to receive pressure, please alert the mods to the situation.
  • Remember that it is okay to set boundaries, and if ANYONE is making you uncomfortable it is okay for you to end the conversation. We suggest that if someone sends you an IM and you don't know who they are, ask for their Pandy's screenname and verify that they are in fact a member. You might even ask them to respond to a PM you send via Pandy's PM tool to truly verify their identity before engaging in a conversation.
  • Pandy’s is not responsible for any difficulties you may have with another member outside of this site, and there may be little we can do to assist you. However, there are other steps that you may be able to take if you are being harassed or threatened, including blocking the person from your IM program, tracking and reporting their ISP, and taking your concerns to your local authorities.

If you are having concerns about another member, please contact us so that we can help assist you and take any necessary measures to keep the board safe. If you have any questions, you can e-mail admin@pandys.org regarding board issues, chatmods@pandys.org regarding chat issues, or PM any individual moderator or chat mod.

Thank you for helping to keep Pandy’s a safe place :)
