Avatar vs Photo

Could you tell me when an Avatar appears and when a photo does? I've got an Avatar which appears with my username on posts (at least it does to me) but it doesn't come up with my name in other members' friends lists. Can I set my photo to be the same as my Avatar?

Hi Melk,

You can make your profile picture the same as your avatar. You can change your profile pic through your control panel. click on your profile (click on your user name in the top-right corner and choose "My Settings"). You'll see a tab on the right to change your profile picture. This picture will show up when people view your profile, in their friend list, and at the top of your screen when you log in.

I believe the avatar only shows up under your name when you post and in PMs.
