It is not an invitation
a provocation
an indication
that I want it
or give it
or that I hook.

My short skirt
is not begging for it
it does not want you
to rip it off me
or pull it down.

My short skirt
is not a legal reason
for raping me
although it has been before
it will not hold up
in the new court.

My short skirt, believe it or not
has nothing to do with you.

My short skirt
is about discovering
the power of my lower calves
about cool autumn air traveling
up my inner thighs
about allowing everything I see
or pass or feel to live inside.

My short skirt is not proof
that I am stupid
or undecided
or a malleable little girl.

My short skirt is my defiance
I will not let you make me afraid
My short skirt is not showing off
this is who I am
before you made me cover it
or tone it down.
Get used to it.

My short skirt is happiness
I can feel myself on the ground.
I am here. I am hot.

My short skirt is a liberation
flag in the women's army
I declare these streets, any streets
my vagina's country.

My short skirt
is turquoise water
with swimming colored fish
a summer festival
in the starry dark
a bird calling
a train arriving in a foreign town
my short skirt is a wild spin
a full breath
a tango dip
my short skirt is
initiation
appreciation
excitation.

But mainly my short skirt
and everything under it
is Mine.
Mine.
Mine. -Eve Ensler, Vagina Monologues

I thought that this was phenominal and I hadn't seen it posted anywhere here. I hope it is not already posted on this forum. I thought that the whole idea rocked. This is my body, I own it, no one else can.

I saw the Vagina Monologues this year for the first time too. I had only seen a little clip of it on HBO or somewhere before, and finally got to catch the whole thing.
I thought it was a great show. Kind of made me feel empowered too.
Thanks for posting that

Thank you all for your fabulous comments. I found this quote online. The Vagina Monolgues is a play. It is fantastic but possibly the hardest thing I have ever saw. At one point I ran into the bathroom crying because I could hardly breath it was so moving but very triggering. So just be warned if you go and see it and our particularly sensitive to that sort of thing. It is profound. I am glad they are doing it to spread the word about rape and other acts of violence that can harm and oppress women.

Anyway hugs to all of you. I am glad it was enjoyed. If I find more powerful stuff like this then I will share.

Thanks also for moving this to wonderful threads!

we just did a production of it at school here. SO awesome. the proceeds went to raise money for a women's shelter here and fistula hospital. i have never felt as empowered as when i was on that stage. i had "hair" which was one of the better monologues, the easier ones to do. i felt SO awesome. the cast were really sexy amazing women, all of who i love so deeply now and will do for ages to come.

If anyone lives around the Ann Arbor area for Michigan, we do it every year through SAPAC (I'm a volunteer there) and we show the video sold by the vigina monologues website...it's quite a powerful video...when we were training for SAPAC, we watched it and not one person remained uneffected by it...some were crying quietly, others sobbing, and others were just stunned and silent. (and keep in mind that half or more of the volunteers aren't survivors).

I just did that piece yesterday as an audition for my school's VMs. It was so empowering to do it!
