Hi Shannon. I'm new to the board, and I really am a friend to someone who has been living with abuse. It's such a complicated story, but I can't seem to find anyone in our county in Oregon to listen to her. It has taken a year to get her and her minor child into a good living situation away from him. He keeps calling (we blocked his cell/home/work number but he calls from other phones). He drives by her new apt (she had a restraining order against him a year ago he hired an attorney got it dropped). He won't give her even personal belongings (we've tried everything). Now her adult child who stayed finally left the abuser's home (the minor lives with her) and the abuser has taken the car, with law enforcement's help, which the son paid for. This man is NOT the bio dad of these kids. My friend is so completely shook up, living with him for 10 years, like so many he didn't present this side of himself at first, but gradually after a couple years he started controlling everything. He abused the kids (never reported because of threats) and her. She started reporting the abuse a year or so ago but he paints a picture of her being crazy (she is! Living with him for 10 years!) and the kids being "spoiled". The younger one told my daughter countless times about abuse towards him. In fact we picked him up a couple times before he started driving. He would beg me not to report, says all it does is send him into a rage. Fast forward to now, he has charged my friend with trespassing as she attempted to get her personal things out of the family home. The charge stuck, she now has a record and cannot work in her previous occupation. He undermines her every move, and those of the kids too. Showing up at community functions where she is a faithful volunteer, coming to her church, and worse sports functions. The coaches say they cannot control who comes to those so she always has to have a "bodyguard" with her. This is crazy, I don't know where to start, who to call. We are a small community, but please know everyone knows how he is. It's just that no one does anything about it. I just need some direction. This has to stop for her and the kids.

The RAINN website has a page you can use to search for local crisis centers (http://centers.rainn.org/). I believe there is one in Coos County. You can also call the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1.800.656.HOPE and they will transfer you to your local crisis center.
I live in Oregon too (different county though). I call my local women's crisis center sometimes and I also have trouble with knowing what to say when I call and I get nervous about calling. But whenever I call or go into the center the women who work there make me feel comfortable and it helps me to talk to them. The first time calling was the hardest for me. But it was worth it.
