So in 2005, there was yet another heatwave,

and the air conditioners in my building stopped working.

Landlords are not required by law to provide air conditioning even for medical reasons it seems.

The air conditioning units were removed, leaving a huge gap in the wall.

I asked for screening and was told to just tape up some cardboard,

the parts needed were not available, they were needed elsewhere...

so the women and children in my building were to tolerate the heatwave

and insects that came in through the huge gaps in the walls.

My first friend here in the building spent her last night alive

playing with kids from the building in the backyard, watching fireworks.

I was told that she was moving tree branches so that the kids could see the fireworks.

I was also watching fireworks down by the lake with a woman from my building

who had came to my speech.

My friend had trouble breathing in the middle of the night,

her inhalers were not helping,

she phoned her boyfriend,

the police prevented her friends from entering her apartment.

She died in her apartment....

I was told on the Monday

by the building receptionist

my initial reaction was

I better go upstairs and get my sets of keys

for her apartment and turn them in..

I did not go to her furneral

I have not been to a complete furneral

since my brother's suicide...

a worker started chewing me out

she did not remain my worker

the receptionist had gotten me a furneral card from the service

I left it behind with this worker

I did go to the memorial service in my building

I did give sympathy card to her friends and that included the receptionist...

my favourite memory of this friend

is of her dancing in the streets.....

the air conditioning units ?

were not repaired the entire summer

a summer of relentless heat,

and assorted insects....

the landlord finally fixed them under

the out of the cold program

when i pointed out that they,

the air conditioning units were also

the heating units

(and some

tenants had gone for 2 winters

without heat).

And now 2 summers later

in a heatwave,

the air conditioning units

are once again not working...

which friend will I lose this summer ?

to be continued...
