Is it ok to ask for recommendation for a therapist?

7 posts in this topic

Hi,

I think I may need to see a therapist. After few bad experiences, I'm not ready to just go in the white pages and pick one. I was wondering if it would be okay to ask for recommendation from people living in the same area.

There would not a problem with recommending a therapist but a therapist that suits one person does not necessarily suit another.

I think it would not be something you could do in a post it would have to be by PM.

Ask a moderator if l was you.

I just want to repeat what onetofortynine said, asking a mod. is probably your best bet.

In the mean time, maybe write a list of what you want from a therapist, the kind of experience you want them to have (maybe a PTSD specialist, attachment specialist, DID specialist, trauma specialist, whatever specialist) and your budget and anything else you would really need like maybe accessibility, gender etc. There are some sites around for finding specialists in your area and some of those sites have reviews, comments etc. on so maybe you could get an idea of each person. Also have a think, if you know, about what areas of therapy might work for you and might not. Some therapists might sound absolutely perfect but then only work with say, CBT or DBT or EMDR which might not fit for you.

Check out individual therapist's sites and see if it feels right to you (but remember reviews on sites are going to be hand picked for positive ones!)

Also, really try and take advantage of free introductory sessions to try and get a feel for the T to see if it could possibly work. You're not paying, but you could still get to meet them and see how they work :)

There's also a forum about therapy and mental health, here, so check that out, too :)

Wishing you lots of luck, Lily.

Hi Alex,

I would like to echo what the others have said and consider contacting one of our lovely board moderators.

Perhaps in the meantime you would like to check out the public: resources forum which has lots of information about services for survivors all over the world.

Take gentle care

Lucy

Actually, no, no one here can recommend therapist to you as Pandy's does not have the resources to check out the validity of each person's license and expertise.

My suggestion would be to contact your local Rape Crisis Center and ask for referrals, or RAINN...or even your insurance company (if you have insurance). Another resource, if you are in the States, is NAMI.
