chances_unknown
TWO SVU episodes, the only ones that ever did. When the CO attempted to rape Olivia undercover in the prison and when she is in the rape counselors office before she joins the group saying she feels like she doesn't deserve to be here. That SVU episode with her undercover triggered me too.
Guest self
Hi, (I'm new here, hence the frequent post editting. I had to do a bit of cut and paste to keep my thoughts within their relevant forums, its hard to keep to any one train of thought at a time but I'll try my best not to ramble ) My triggers are: - specific lamp lighting - soothing noises and patronizing words during intimate moments - hands around my throat - feeling coerced - too much attention on my butt - random men on the street that give off a certain vibe - i imagine if anyone was to call me "kitty cat", it hasn't happened yet luckily - little girls with men - which is wierd because I wasn't abused as a child - rape scenes in films or books - lines in films/books/rl like "but you wanted it, it's what you wanted.." where the guy acts all confused ARGH! I too don't always act out on these, its only happened maybe three times where I've freaked out. When I do I need to be wearing as many clothes as is comfortable (and yes a jumper and tracksuit pants can be made comfortable in summer ), I need to have my back protected (the brave and knightly pillow will usually suffice), all the lights need to be on and funny sitcoms or kids films need to be watched. Oh and if anyone makes a soothing noise at me I hate them. How about you girls? Edited July 18, 2010 by self
Guest self
"*when someone says "my turn"..(yeah, even a simple board game is out of the question for me..it always gets said)" Aaaaaaaaah as soon as I read this I became furious! I agree "My Turn" said in a certain way is awful!

lilmisslilly
The movie Billy Madison People grabbing my wrists or shoulders/neck Hearing any word that sounds like rape.. I get a horrible gut wrenching feeling Being stared at. I think I just feel like people can see it on me or something Looking into mens eyes. He made me keep my eyes open. Any touch, really. My weirdest one is probably the first one. He loved it and I used to. Gosh, this is really triggering just thinking about them.
lilmisslilly
The surprising thing is, Law and Order SVU is one of my favorite shows. It doesn't trigger me as much as I thought it would. I really suggest watching that if anyone has a hard time. It makes you not feel alone.
Heidi013
I get triggered by too many things to list, the list would be in the hundreds. They range from things like eating sausages or seeing white sauce to having a shower, being on my hands and knees for any reason, lying on my back, hearing swear words, tall people, sitting next to people standing, blonde guys, hand cuffs, period blood, blood of any kind, needles, piercings, white bed sheets, sofa beds, the list goes on. I am constantly getting triggered multiple times every day. My stress and anxiety are through the roof all the time because of it. I can never escape from the memories because everything reminds me of something bad. I have been hurt so many times i don't know how to move on. spirittame
I get triggered by many everyday things. A man opening the door for me, someone putting their hands on my head, anyone sneaking up behind me, someone playing with my hair, listening to music, dark hair, men in suits, formal dinners, wearing a skirt, playing with my hair, children having having high temperatures, lights down low, children crying, going to the store, dark movie theaters, and any kind of affection being shown to me or to anyone. * I have made a commitment to try and get rid of some of my triggers. * One is to dress nice and wear a skirt once a week to work. * Allow men to open doors for me. * Listen to music and allow myself to remember "WHO I AM", not just what happened to me. I had many more good times than bad times, but the bad stand out so much more. I want to be the beautiful me I once was, without all the terror that came with it. I want to be free to live my life again, happy and care free.
spirittame
For my birthday I got an ipod touch. I love it. I have downloaded many meditations, pranayama, yoga, mindwave audios to help deal with stress, anxiety, pain, and many other things. I have such a hard time breathing. Sometimes I wonder if it is physical pain, or mental pain causing it to hurt so bad. Logging on here brings up so many things, but it seems like the only way for me to find ways to heal. LittleBee
You know what's interesting. I was talking to my mom about what I thought my "weird" trigger was and she gave me advice about a) not judging it and b) seeing it as apart of your story. Of course, triggers still suck, but I'm getting much better at not beating myself up for having what I thought was a silly trigger.
Zarathustra
Tie dye. (Yes. Seriously.) Balding men who wear what remains of their hair in ponytails. Fat men. Yuppies/corporate speak. Snot on my face. Movies with Dirk Bogarde (he seriously looks like my perp). There are others but those are the main ones.

So weirder one's are I also have..... A clicking clock in the silence Certain phrases or nicknames Fast driving People asking too many questions Rough-housing and sudden movements Being home alone Stuff brushing against my skin Smell of Scotch & weed on someone Things around my neck, like tight necklaces I probably have a lot more, just hard to remember them all. DarkKnight
As odd as it sounds, though I am blind (I see only light and dark. Ie I can see a white sofa on a dark brown carpet as a dark mass the size of the sofa but, I can't tell what fabric is on the sofa or if it is a shag or berber carpet.) I have a few visual triigers. The description of some images is enough for me to visualize them, and they will trigger me. Other trigger are cued by my other senses. Burned children, especially thin boys. Boas (feather wraps) Taboo perfume Anal beads, though a plug is fine. Men who are close talkers (don't respect my personal space) Jive talk "My boy" from one male to another. "Good boy" Said in a sexual encounter. Needles Sound of a Zippo lighter Smell of cigarette smoke Smell of burnt flesh Smell of burnt hair Calling street drugs liquid candy or feel good. Agate
Really great thread! Some of my weird ones... Having my back to a door The sound of people walking above me (for instance, I'm downstairs and they're walking upstairs) Adult voices yelling at each other The sound of a vacuum cleaner Anything having to do with a hospital renal unit Being locked in/trapped The gospel chorus "Do Lord" (MASSIVE for me, probably the biggest on this list)
mamabear
Even as a secondary survivor I have triggers that bring me anger for what happened to the person I love. 1. Seeing photos of the girl that cheated with my daughters BF when they had a small tiff.... that is because her BFF told me praying on guys that will be an easy night is her M.O. 2. Seeing any girls that are giving the impression to a guy that they are not dating that tonight will be just fine! 3. Thinking about the lack of support my daughter is getting from her room mate - whose distancing began before the incident and was why my daughter went out with a group she didn't know well. 4. The thought of porn, of any kind.

fire.bird
There's the run of standard ones: weight on my chest, certain sexual things. But the weird ones? -Hondas. Any model. -Discussion of Daniel Quinn's "Ishmael" novels. -Easter. Its approach, specifically. Used to blues music from before 1960 was on that list, but that one's getting a lot better, finally. Which I think is quite a victory. I missed it. What a great thread.
airplane
Certain smells will trigger me, that's when I start to get this out of bounds feeling. prettypoison
Webcams, Any type of hole in walls, sitting at desks, Anyone who looks anything like him, The crazy messages he still sends me not matter how many times I tried to stop his contact he always finds me and I have just given up trying, The other girl he hurt. Every time I look at her I wonder if she blames me for not reporting him right away for what he did to me so she would have never been in the situation where he hurt her far worse. Seeing people with dragon, lemmy, or vengeful in their user name. Any time anyone talks about thunder bay (where he once lived).
